Here is a short Q&A with Amy:

Q: What are your specialties and why did you choose them?

Amy: Anxiety, Codependency, Coping Skills, Weight and Food Issues, Divorce, Infidelity, Self Esteem, and Spirituality.

Q: What therapeutic approaches do you use?

Amy: I use a variety of approaches including Person- Centered, Mindfulness, Cognitive Behavior Therapy, and Existential.

Q: What is a quote or piece of advice you like to give to clients?

Amy: A quote I like to give my clients is “I control my thoughts; my thoughts do not control me”. In this busy world it is so easy to think that our first thought is the right and true thought. With introspection we can often find what may really be the right and true thought in a situation. Thoughts are like clouds floating by and we have the choice to pick out the one we want to think about and let the rest go.

Q: What is the biggest misconception about therapy?

Amy: One of the biggest misconceptions about therapy is thinking the therapist is going to fix and solve my problems. Sometimes we want a quick fix and have someone to tell us what to do. I believe we each have the answer in our own heart. By working with a therapist, you can uncover your own true answer. The therapist is there to listen, support, guide, and suggest ideas for you to discover solutions.

Q: What is the most rewarding part of being a therapist?

Amy: One of the most rewarding parts about being a therapist is hearing and seeing my client having an “aha” moment. The moment they discover something about themselves that changes the way they look at themselves in a more positive light and changes their direction for the better.

Q: What is one thing we could do this month to boost our own mental health?

Amy: Take time to focus on your breathing every day when you first open your eyes or before bed. Think of something you appreciate at the same time. If you like, you may enjoy breathing like this many times during the day. Appreciation ideas can be as simple as basking in the sun, spending time with a pet, remembering a special time with a favorite person, or anything else that gives you joy.
